CHAPTER ELEVEN

“What?” Anthony exclaimed in disbelief as Emily filled him in on the latest development in Mrs. Klein’s case. The news about the poison in the orange juice distracted him from pushing her for details about her date with Mike—at least for the time being.

“I know. It’s hard to comprehend. Duncan’s phone went to voicemail this morning, but I’m hoping he calls with an update,” Emily said as she got Elvis settled in her office.

“We have a jam-packed schedule today, and your first appointment is already here,” Anthony said. “Do you want to have dinner together so we can hash over all these facts? It might take me all day to digest this news.”

“Yeah. My head was spinning last night, trying to sort it all out. It’ll be better if we can talk it through. We might know more by then, too.”

“And don’t think I’ve forgotten about your date,” Anthony reminded her on his way out the door. “But we can save that for later.” Emily rolled her eyes at Anthony, but in return, he gave her a nod and a look that clearly communicated she was duty bound to share the particulars.

Anthony wasn’t joking about the busy appointment schedule. Emily worked through her lunch break, but took a minute to check the week ahead to see which day looked the most promising to leave the hospital on time for her second date with Mike. So far, Wednesday was the winner.

Emily had finished entering notes into a patient file when Anthony walked into her office. “The last client is gone and the doors are locked. Do you want to pick up some takeout on your way home? I’m almost done with the staff schedule for next month and will be leaving in a few minutes.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Emily said. “I’m starving. How about Italian tonight? That new place right before the causeway advertises authentic New York-style pizza. I’ve heard good things about it.”

“Sure, you pick the toppings. I’m good with anything except anchovies and pineapple.”

Emily pinched her lips together to suppress a grin. Anthony’s pizza aversions had not changed since high school, but he always reminded her, just in case. After placing their takeout order, she leashed Elvis and headed for the door, shouting back over her shoulder, “Oh, and I still have ice cream sandwiches left over from the kids.” Anthony replied with a thumbs up.

The pizza place had an outdoor order and pickup window, catering to the people riding their bikes to and from the beach. Her order wasn’t ready yet, so Emily sat down at one of the nearby picnic tables to check her phone messages. Elvis was content to hang out underneath the table while sniffing around for crumbs.

The first message was from Mike, letting her know he had a great time on Saturday night and was looking forward to seeing her this week. Emily smiled and her heart started racing at the sound of his voice. The second message from Duncan had the opposite effect.
